Who decides which dual credit courses are offered?
The dual credit courses available at each high school are determined jointly by Weatherford College and the school district through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The MOU outlines the approved dual credit pathways, courses, instructional responsibilities, and other program requirements. As a result, course offerings may vary from one high school to another based on the partnership agreement, student demand, qualified instructors, and district needs. Students should consult their high school counselor to learn which dual credit courses are available at their campus.
Will dual credit classes count toward both high school and college graduation?
Yes. Approved dual credit courses satisfy both high school graduation requirements (when applicable) and ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø degree or certificate requirements.
Will dual credit affect my student's college GPA?
Yes. All dual credit courses become part of the student's permanent ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø transcript, and grades earned are calculated into the student's college GPA.
What happens if my student fails a dual credit course?
A failing grade may affect the student's high school graduation plan, college GPA, future financial aid eligibility, and ability to continue participating in dual credit. Students should speak with their instructor if they are experiencing academic difficulties.
Can my student drop a dual credit class?
Students may be able to withdraw from a course before the published withdrawal deadline. Students should consult with their high school counselor before making this decision, as withdrawing may affect high school graduation requirements, athletic eligibility, financial aid, or future college plans. Students who wish to withdraw must complete a withdrawal form, have it signed by their counselor, and then submit it to the Dual Credit Office.
What if my student needs help?
³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø offers a variety of student support services, including tutoring, academic advising, library services, accessibility services, and technical support. Students are encouraged to seek assistance as soon as they begin experiencing difficulty.
How much time should my student expect to spend outside of class?
College courses require significant independent study. Students should expect to spend several hours each week reading, studying, completing assignments, and preparing for exams.
Who should my student contact if they have questions about a class?
Students should first contact their instructor. If additional assistance is needed, they may contact their high school counselor or the ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø Dual Credit Office, depending on the nature of the question.
Can parents access their student's grades or talk with instructors?
Generally, no. Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), educational records belong to the student. ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø employees cannot discuss a student's academic records with parents or guardians unless the student has provided written consent through a FERPA release form.
What technology will my student need?
Students should have reliable internet access and regular access to a computer capable of using ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø systems, including Coyote Connect, Canvas, and Microsoft 365 applications.
How will my student know if ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø needs something?
Students are responsible for checking their ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø email regularly. Official college communications, including important deadlines and required actions, are sent to the student's ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø email account.
What if my student has a concern about a class or instructor?
Students are encouraged to first discuss the concern directly with their instructor, as many questions can be resolved through open communication. If the concern cannot be resolved, students should follow the procedures outlined in the ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø Dual Credit Student Handbook for addressing academic concerns and grievances.
Who do I contact if I have questions?
Questions about course selection and high school graduation requirements should be directed to the student's high school counselor. Questions regarding admissions, registration, tuition, eligibility, or ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø policies should be directed to the Weatherford College Dual Credit Office.
