Application Process

In order to apply to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program at ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø, you must complete the following:

1. Apply to ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø to receive a Student ID

Complete the ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø application.

2. Complete Prerequisite Courses

DMSO 1210- Introduction to Sonography earns 6 points for an A (vs. 4 for standard courses). Beginning December 2026, this course is required for all applicants.

Optional + 1 Bonus Point: Complete Medical Terminology at the college level with a B or higher.

  • BIOL 2401: Anatomy and Physiology I [must be taken within the past 5 years at the time of admission]
  • BIOL 2402: Anatomy and Physiology II [must be taken within the past 5 years at the time of admission]
  • MATH 1314: College Algebra or higher
  • ENGL 1301: English Composition I
  • PSYC 2301: Introduction to Psychology
  • PHYS X4XX: One of the following: PHYS 1401, PHYS 1415, PHYS 1417 OR PHYS 2425
  • Elective: Language/Philosophy/Culture/Creative Art
  • DMSO 1210: Introduction to Sonography

 **Students who will finish prerequisites by end of spring semester may still apply but will only be considered for alternate status. Final grades must be received no later than May 31.

3.  Consider working towards earning an additional degree for points [NOT A REQUIREMENT]:

Master's 8 points
Bachelor's 6 points
Associate's 4 points

 

4. Take the HESI-A2 Entrance Exam

Points are awarded based on the average of your Reading, Math, A&P, Grammar, and Vocabulary scores. You must score at least 75% on both Reading Comprehension and Math to be considered.

This exam can be taken more than once (once every 60 days). Prior HESI-A2 results from within the past 2 years that include Math, Reading, A&P, Grammar and Vocabulary may be submitted.

This exam may be taken at ³Ô¹Ï¹ÙÍø's Testing Center (Jack Knight Building, 817-598-6383) or at another institution.

5. Begin Hepatitis B Vaccine Series

Submit documentation of either the first Hepatitis B vaccination or a positive Hepatitis B titer with your application. We accept either the Heplisav-B series (takes approximately 2 months to complete) or the traditional Hepatitis B vaccine series (takes approximately 4–6 months to complete). The vaccine series must be fully complete by July, prior to the start of the Fall semester. Please note that the Fast Track series is not accepted.

6.  Consider working in the Medical Field for Work Experience Points [NOT A REQUIREMENT]:

  1. Consideration for credit for human medical work experience requires submission of a letter from your employer stating:
    1. Dates you were employed on either a full-time or part-time basis
    2. Specific duties you performed in your role (involving patient care)
    3. Signature of employer with their business contact information
  2. Points awarded:
    2 points per year of full-time work experience that involves **direct patient care.  Maximum of 6 points allowed.
    **Direct patient care requires providing care to persons needing health services, not supporting roles that provide patient care.
    1. Roles that would earn medical work experience points: phlebotomist, transporter at hospital, medical assistant, certified nurse’s assistant, etc.
    2. Roles that would not earn medical work experience points: working the front desk in an ER or physician’s office, cleaning medical instruments, working in the billing department of a medical facility, etc.

This letter must be submitted with your application. The program will verify employment on a case-to-case basis.

7. Complete and submit the Health & Human Sciences Application

Indicate you are applying for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program. Documentation verifying completion of the items listed above must be included with the application and either mailed to the college or submitted via email.

It is the responsibility of the student to submit a complete application. Failure to submit evidence that all requirements were met will result in denial of application.

Final Ranking Process

Approximately 40 applicants with the highest cumulative point totals will be invited to interview with the program. Cumulative points are based on prerequisite coursework, previous degree(s) if applicable, the average of the HESI A2 exam scores and qualifying medical work experience if applicable. Interviews are also scored as part of the selection process. The number of applicants selected for interviews is subject to change.

The twenty applicants with the highest cumulative point totals, based on the criteria outlined below, will be offered admission to the upcoming Fall cohort.

Additional qualified applicants will be selected as alternates and will be considered if openings become available.

English Proficiency Procedure

International applicants, visa holders, permanent residents, and exchange students whose native language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency. Applicants to the Sonography Program must demonstrate oral English communication skills sufficient for participation in the classroom, skills laboratory, and clinical settings. These skills are essential for successful completion of coursework and to ensure a safe patient care environment. Applicants must use acceptable grammar and pronunciation in formal classroom presentations and verbal interactions with healthcare professionals, faculty, peers, and patients in diverse clinical settings. Proof of English proficiency must be submitted by the end of the application period for the desired allied health program.
